This year we received just under 1800 entries to the Crayola Children’s Book Week Competition, more than twice the amount of last year’s competition, and so our judging panel were very busy looking through so many wonderful entries.

The standard of the covers was very high indeed. The judges found many entries were beautifully drawn, witty and original, and that children around the country had worked very hard to create excellent, thought-provoking and eyecatching book covers.

A huge thank you and massive “Well done!” goes to all of the children who entered the competition.

Booktrust in association with Crayola are pleased to announce that the winners are as follows:

my life as a rabbit

Years 1 & 2 winner and Overall winner – My Life as a Rabbit, Isabella Binks, age 5, Moorside Infants School, Ripon

The judges felt that this was an overall winner because of its originality, humour and overall balance of composition. It is drawn very well indeed and they particularly liked the inclusion of the cross-section of the rabbits’ tunnels underground. It is an extremely accomplished drawing, especially considering Isabella’s age.

Witch's Brew

Years 3 & 4 winner – The Witch’s Powerful Brew, Kerreanne Edwards, age 8, Clackclose CP School, Downham Market, Norfolk.

This entry is very eyecatching and interesting and displays the title and name of the author very vibrantly and imaginatively. It is a cover that engages with the idea of genre very well. The judges could really imagine it as a real book cover.

Green is the new Black

Years 5 & 6 winner – Green is the New Black, Daisy Kershaw, age 10, Manuden Primary School, Manuden, Hertfordshire.

The judges really enjoyed this different take on the idea of the book cover artwork and thought the back cover text, the overall theme of the story and the title all made a simple but very striking effect.
